the hands face street portraits

a conceptual series that i worked on for four months in the summer of 2002. i walked the streets of toronto and approached strangers, asking them to pose with their hands covering their faces. a definite exercise in rejection and patience; the vast majority of people i asked said no. for the last shot in the series, i had to wait eight days at the same intersection (i was determined to use that particular intersection's background) until i could finally find the right person and convince him to pose.

rafael, drummer

i heard rafael before i saw him. walking down queen street in toronto, i heard a djembe (african drum) being struck by passionate hands. i came closer to the source, saw the drummer, and he was beautiful in the hot afternoon sun, passionate for his play. i introduced myself, we talked, he was very cool, and he let me photograph him while he played. he quickly forgot that i was there, and i quickly forgot that i was photographing him.

hand shapes

a simple fine art series studying hands and light. the hands are my own. yes, i like hands.

tuition freeze protest, carleton university

a photo documentary of the protest for a tuition freeze in february 2002 at carleton university in ottawa.

words and photos - the items below aren't photo series, but photo essays are closely related - series and essays both tell stories - and more to the point, i didn't want to make a whole new category
